ÖBB education campus: future of training and groundbreaking projects!
St. Pölten, Österreich - On March 27, 2025, Governor Johanna Mikl-Leitner met with Federal Minister Peter Hanke at the ÖBB education campus in St. Pölten. The aim of the meeting was to visit the training opportunities of the ÖBB. They were accompanied by ÖBB infrastructure officer Silvia Angelo and the St. Pöltner Mayor Matthias Stadler. During the inspection, institutions such as the teaching workshop, the track training system, the simulator and the teaching model hall were visited, which offer an insight into the training of future specialists.
A central theme of the conversation between Mikl-Leitner and Hanke was the renewed lock of the ÖBB western route in Tullnerfeld, which is planned from mid-May to early June. Mikl-Leitner called for the stress for commuters to keep as low as possible and spoke out for a quick implementation of the repair work. It was also emphasized that the capacity of the rail replacement traffic should be generously measured in order to meet the needs of travelers.
ÖBB rail infrastructure and future plans
The western route is a significant part of the Rhein-Donau corridor and therefore essential for the Trans-European transport networks. According to ÖBB infrastructure drive around 32 % of all trains in Austria on this route, which, however, only accounts for about 10 % of the entire rail network. Forecasts indicate a significant increase in both freight and passenger transport.
In order to meet the increasing traffic needs, the ÖBB is planning to expand the western route from two to four tracks. This measure is intended to help accelerate train traffic so that speeds over 200 km/h can be reached. Travelers in long -distance transport benefit from shortened travel times, for example the trip from Vienna to Linz is faster.
training and personnel development at ÖBB
Another important point was highlighted by Mikl-Leitner: The ÖBB plans to increase the training capacities for train drivers from currently 480 to 640, which means an increase of 33 %. There are still 400 apprenticeships available for 2025. Currently over 4,500 train drivers are employed by the ÖBB, with the aim of increasing this number to 4,900 within the next three years.
Federal Minister Hanke emphasized the outstanding importance of well -trained specialists for the mobility transition and public transport. The ÖBB training takes place in various professions, also in railway telecommunications technology. Apprentice Salma, who goes through a four-year training, has the responsibility to monitor the systems of information and communication technology. The remuneration varies during the training, starting at 687 euros in the first year of apprenticeship and increasing to 1,595 euros in the fourth year.
The framework conditions for training at the ÖBB were praised by Mikl-Leitner, since it is continuously invested in personnel and infrastructure. Interested parties who strive for a career in the rail sector can apply to nasicher.at
With the planned measures in the field of infrastructure and training, ÖBB commitment shows commitment on several levels to make mobility in Austria future -proof.
