Novak Djokovic, the Serbian tennis star and 24-time Grand Slam champion, is facing one of the biggest crises of his career. After three straight defeats, including a surprising first-round exit at Indian Wells against Dutch “lucky loser” Botic van de Zandschulp, his dominance on the court was questioned. This negative streak, which had not occurred since 2018, also includes defeats against Matteo Berrettini in Doha and an injury-related retirement against Alexander Zverev at the Australian Open, reports 20min.ch.
Tennis expert Michel Kratochvil highlights that Djokovic has been playing fewer tournaments recently, which is affecting his much-needed match practice. This lack of competitive experience could be crucial, as it poses a challenge for experienced players like him to stay at their best. “If you play fewer games, even as an experienced player you will lack match practice,” explains Kratochvil, as well Kosmo.at notes. Despite these difficulties, Djokovic is still considered one of the top favorites at major tournaments, along with rising talents such as Jannik Sinner and Carlos Alcaraz.
Considerations about the future
Kratochvil notes in his analysis that Djokovic's career, once the undisputed leader of tennis, may now be nearing its end. “It’s a career that’s slowly coming to an end,” he notes. Still, he believes Djokovic has the potential to beat any opponent, fueling hopes of a comeback. Kratochvil sees the desire to show the new generation that he can still keep up as a possible motivation for Djokovic. “Maybe Djokovic wants to show the boys again and then stop,” he explains, speculating about the star’s ambition to still win another Grand Slam.
