Bundesbank mourns Helmut Schlesinger: a life for the D-Mark

The former President of the Deutsche Bundesbank, Helmut Schlesinger, died at the age of 100. His death was announced by the Bundesbank on Friday, with the actual date of his death on Monday, December 23, 2024. Schlesinger was President of the Bundesbank from August 1991 to September 1993 after working as Vice President from January 1980 to the end of July 1991.

Helmut Schlesinger, who was born in Penzberg, Upper Bavaria in 1924, began his career at the bank of German countries, the forerunner of the Bundesbank, in 1952. During his work over 41 years, he significantly shaped the institution. Under his leadership, the D-Mark became one of the most stable currencies in the world and the stability anchor in the European currency system.

appreciation and influence

The Bundesbank paid tribute to Schlesinger's commitment to a stable D-Mark that brought him international recognition. Bundesbank President Joachim Nagel praised his contribution to the stability of the D-Mark and described him as the "guardian of stability culture". Prime Minister Boris Rhein (CDU) commented and described Schlesinger as a model in the financial sector.

Schlesinger, known as the "Bavarian Prussian" and "uncomfortable reminder", was famous for his sensitivity to inflation. During his tenure as President, the Bundesbank spent higher interest rates against the price bullet after German reunification, which was criticized internationally. In addition, he introduced the concept of money supply control, which contributed to the stability of the D-Mark.

Numerous awards were given to him for his merits, including the Hessian Order of Merit, the honorary doctorate of the Goethe University of Frankfurt and the Great Federal Cross of Merit. Schlesinger had been married to his wife Carola since 1949 and had four children. The Bundesbank is saying goodbye to this influential man, who has left a lasting impression in the financial world, as Tagesschau.de href = "https://www.bundesbank.de/de/hemen/bundesbank-trauert-um-hemaligen-praesidenten-helmut-948602"> Bundesbank
