Neumünster supports animal shelter with 170,000 euros in grants - a lifeline!

In Neumünster, the city council with an overwhelming majority decided to provide the Animal Welfare Association for a financial support of up to 170,000 euros for 2025 in order to avert an impending liquidity crisis. The application made by Mayor Tobias Bergmann (SPD) received 49 votes for it and only seven against it. Critics, including the FDP and the "Citizens for Neumünster" group, demanded that the high sum have been checked because they are not sure whether the city has the necessary funds, such as KN-Online.de

The animal protection association faces special challenges: with about 80 cats that have to be maintained at the moment, and increasing operating costs, the association is forced to apply for additional funds. A sales of inherited real estate is promised, but there is still a deficit of around 100,000 euros for 2024. The increased costs for the supply material and the personnel expenses by 75 percent represent a significant burden. Another influx of fund animals also contains the capacity of the animal shelter, which had to look after over 249 animals in the previous year, as the club chairman Ulrike Steinbach emphasized.

Current Situation in the animal shelter

The Neumünster animal shelter, which not only runs a main location on Geerdtsstrasse, but also a new location in Wasbek, has currently declared a mediation stop until January 2, 2025. This is done to ensure that no animals end up under the Christmas tree as gifts. Nevertheless, interested parties can continue to get to know the animals, reports the animal shelter on its website Tierheim-nms.de . This precaution is particularly important in the stressful Christmas season, since the animals can react particularly sensitively in the new environment and during New Year's Eve.

The facility recently set up a desired tree in the Fressnapf branches in Neumünster to make the protégés happy at Christmas and to mobilize the support of the community. Thanks to the help of the citizens and sponsors, the animal shelter team is optimistic about surviving the critical phase and continuing to provide the numerous found animals there.
