Lidl lowers prices: up to 25 % discount on popular oils from April 2!
From Wednesday, April 2, 2025, Lidl Austria will reduce prices for a variety of products by up to 25 percent. This is a gratifying message for consumers who have faced rising food prices in recent years. The latest price reductions follow only ten days after a permanent reduction in butter prices, which is an essential product for many households. This measure seems to be an answer to the current market situation in which consumers are experiencing ever greater financial burdens from food prices.
Overall, the price reduction includes more than ten different olive, rapeseed and sunflower oils. For the announced sample prices, products such as the Primadonna olive oil can be found for roasting (1 liter) for 5.99 euros, which corresponds to a discount of 25 percent. Further remarkable price reductions lay the foundation for a possible relief in purchasing:
- primadonna olive oil extra nativ (750 ml): 6.99 euros (-13 %)
- Italiamo Nat Oliv Ext Dop Terra Bari (750 ml): 8.99 euros (-10 %)
- primadonna olive oil extra nativ (gr) pdo chania K. (500 ml): 6.49 euros (-11 %)
- Vita d’Or rapese oil (1 liter): 1.99 euros (-13 %)
- Vita d’Or Bio sunflower oil cold-pressed (500 ml): 2.19 euros (-8 %)
The causes of price increases
The Lidl price reductions are a ray of hope at a time when food prices have risen on average by around 30 percent since 2021. According to the NRW consumer center, factors such as rising energy costs, high prices for fertilizers and feed and a general shortage of labor are primarily responsible for these increases. This has a comprehensive impact on pricing for all food groups, including staple foods.
Another example is the butter prices that have been subject to major fluctuations since the beginning of the Ukraine War. Finally, the price before Christmas 2024 rose to a high, which underlines the economic challenges for many consumers. The consumer advice centers also warn of hidden price increases, as well as lower filling quantities and changed recipes that affect the price-performance ratio.
The reaction of consumers
The persistent price increases are increasingly necessary for consumers to make price comparisons and to look for cheaper alternatives. In this context, Lidl's response to the price situation is remarkable, since the company completely pays the costs for the price reductions without passing it down to the suppliers. This strategy could also be seen as an attempt to give the company a better reputation and to position itself as customer -oriented in a challenging market environment.
Further information on the price cuts is available on the Lidl Austria website. However, these measures could only represent a small part of the support that consumers need to deal with the increasing cost of living, which could further heat the political discussion about pricing in the trade.
