Young people are suffering increasingly: 409,000 depressive in 2023!
Alarming messages for the youth! Depression in young people is increasing rapidly. According to a recent analysis by the Barmer Institute for Health System Research, there are already 409,000 affected people aged five to 24 in 2023. This means a worrying increase of almost 30 percent compared to 2018 when 316,000 young people were affected.
The increase has been particularly dramatic since Corona pandemic: the number of depression rose from 327,000 in 2020 to 383,000 in 2021. And the worst? The numbers do not collapse even after the end of the pandemic. Christoph Straub, CEO of Barmer, comments: "The significant increase in depression in young people is worrying." Many affected and their relatives often have difficulty finding the help they urgently need.
women particularly affected
The focus is on young women in particular. In the period from 2018 to 2023, the number of depressive girls and young women rose from around 204,000 to 283,000 - that is impressive 38 percent! In contrast, cases in young and young men only rose by 14 percent from 112,000 to 127,000. Straub warns: "We know that there are gender differences in depression, but further analyzes are necessary to understand the exact relationships." A call to the quick action at a time when any help counts!
