Driven hunt in the forest: protection for deer and pigs in Speyer!

On Saturday there was a driven hunt in the forest between Speyer and Schifferstadt, in which a total of 14 deer and two wild boars were killed. Organizer Stephan Hoffmann and old forester Ernst-Christian Driedger declared the need for such hunts to regulate the given game density and thus avoid damage to the vegetation. The event attracted several dozen hunters, who gathered at the grill hut at the Schifferstadter Mittellacheweiher early in the morning to take part in this important event, as the Rheinpfalz reported.

driven hunt as a necessary forest protection

The driven hunt is not only a tradition, it also plays a central role in game management. Especially in winter, when the food intake of the deer is severely restricted, the game in the woods concentrates, which leads to an increase in population density. According to the German Wildlife Foundation, a 20 kilogram deer requires between two and four kilograms of green mass every day, which makes the ground of the roebuck particularly challenging in food bottlenecks. This inevitably leads to an increased bite to young shoots, which can damage the forest sustainably, according to the explanations on Pirsch .

Early and targeted hunts are therefore a valuable strategy to reduce the ban on a minimum and to secure the health of the forests. Snow, which usually only falls in January, increases the problem, since deer eat less in winter conditions and thus damage more buds before they are killed. It is therefore important to implement the shooting plans in good time. With the successful course of the driven hunt on Saturday, not only contributed to the regulation of the game population, but also a contribution to the long -term protection of the forest stocks.
