Abolition of the air hundred: Styrian in health needs!

In the Styrian state parliament, it was boiling on Tuesday because of the planned abolition of the "air hundred", a measure to protect air quality on the motorways around Graz. The blue-black state government has announced that it would take this decision in its meeting on April 24, which brought the Greens and the SPÖ on the barricades. The air hundred was introduced to reduce health risks from car exhaust gases and ultra-stones, but the government argues that current vehicle technologies have already improved air quality. "However, I personally do not have the relevant expertise in environmental policy issues," said Health Councilor Karlheinz Kornhäusl (ÖVP), while the opposition spoke of an ideology -driven decision that endangers the health of the population.

Worting struggle in the state parliament

GREEN Club chairwoman Sandra Krautwaschl urged the health consequences of the measure: "Bad air makes people sick. Diseases such as asthma and dementia are associated with it." This view was supported by the KPÖ and the NEOS, who see the abolition of a threat to the health of a quarter of the population. In contrast, FPÖ MP Michael Wagner praised the decision as the end of a "harassment" for commuters and referred to the improved exhaust gas standards in the vehicles, which the measure is obsolete, as well as the Krone reports.

The debate was shaped by heated word battles. Armin Forstner (ÖVP) emphasized that the limit values had not been exceeded since 2020, while the opposition criticized that such decisions were made without considering scientific data. The responsible environmental state council Hannes Amesbauer (FPÖ) countered with the reference to the need to comply with election promises. The waves in the state parliament will go up, and the consequences of this decision will surely be far -reaching, while citizens are wondering what they should think of these political decisions.
