Canadas Carney presents a new cabinet focus: Economy & US-Zölle
The Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney presented his new cabinet in Rideau Hall in Ottawa on Tuesday and emphasizes that his ministry will put a "main focus" on the country's economy. This was done after a turbulent choice, which was triggered by punitive tariffs and annexation threats of the United States.
a new economic and security policy course
In a statement after the swearing -in of the cabinet, Carney's office explained: "The Canadians chose this new government with a strong mandate to define a new economic and security relationship with the United States, to build a stronger economy, to reduce the cost of living and to keep our communities secure."
Personnel changes in the cabinet
The new cabinet consists of 28 ministers and contains some remarkable changes. Anita Anand replaces the previous Foreign Minister Mélanie Joly, who is now heading the Ministry of Industry.
focus on the Canadian economy
"We have to make a new agreement with the Americans," said Carney in a press conference after the swearing -in. "But our main focus is on the economy, especially the Canadian economy." He added: "We are at the beginning of an industrial transformation, and Madame Joly as Minister of Industry will play a leading role, together with the other cabinet members and me."
The relationship with the USA
With regard to the changing relationship with the USA, Carney said during the press conference that he would take over "the last responsibility" for all diplomatic contacts with Washington, supported by five other ministers: the ministers for foreign affairs, finances, public security, defense and Canada-US-trade.
a uniform internal market
The Ministry of Canada US trade is now headed by Dominic Leblanc, the former Minister of International Trade, which is now responsible for "Canada-US-Trade, ме government affairs and a Canadian economy". During the election campaign, Carney often spoke about "creating an economy of 13 (provinces and territories)" in order to deal with the challenges of US criminal duties and their own federal taxes on interprovial trade.
On Tuesday, Carney reiterated that his new cabinet would accelerate laws to “reduce all remaining state obstacles for internal Canadian trade than our contribution to the establishment of a Canadian economy from 13 provinces and territories.”
stable ministeries and criticism of the opposition
Some ministers keep their offices: Chrystia Freeland, former rival Carney in the race for the leadership of the liberal party, remains the minister for transport. François-Philippe Champagne, which was part of the initial Canadian delegation in Washington during the first negotiations, remains finance minister.
Several ministers previously worked in the government of former Prime Minister Justin Trudeau, which was quickly noticed by the political opponents of the liberals. The chairman of the conservative party, Pierre Poilievre, argued in a press conference that the presence of Trudeau confidants in Carney's cabinet indicates that the Liberals will only offer the Canadians "more of the same".
"A total of 14 Trudeau Minister are now in Carney's cabinet," said Poilievre. "It's more of the same while Canada needs real change." The conservative politician had already practiced similar criticism in March after Carney's first cabinet was presented.
