Hungary prohibits Pride parade: Rights of the LGBTIQ+ community in danger!
Budapest, Ungarn - The situation for the LGBTIQ+ community in Hungary is tightened by a harder law that was adopted by Parliament in Budapest on Tuesday. Beate Meinl-Reisinger, the Austrian Foreign Minister of NEOS, expressed her concern about current developments in a conversation with her Hungarian counterpart Peter Szijjártó. According to her, basic and human rights represent the "foundation of our European Union", which should ensure the individual freedom of each individual. She referred to the worrying trends, especially against the background of increasing willingness to violence towards gays and lesbians, as announced on platform X.
The new law states that festivities such as the Pride parade, in which the rights of non-heterosexual life plans are demonstrated, are prohibited in the future if they violate the Child Protection Act. Anyone who still takes part in such a meeting must expect high fines. Face recognition software may now also be used to check the participants. In this context, Szijjártó made it clear that the Hungarian government would ignore the expectations of the international community and instead concentrate on the wishes of the Hungarian people.
child protection as an argument
Under the right -wing conservative leadership of Prime Minister Viktor Orbán, homosexuality is considered questionable, especially with regard to the alleged security of children. Since 2021, a law that regulates access to information about non -heterosexual life forms for children and adolescents has been able to find the possibility that such content will find access to minors. These serious restrictions are sharply criticized by many human rights organizations because they represent a threat to freedom and rights of the LGBTIQ+ community in Hungary
Although the two foreign ministers also talked about the Ukraine conflict, the situation for the LGBTIQ+ Community remains a critical topic that is top priority for Meinl-Reisinger. She emphasized the need for an open dialogue and urged a critical examination of the Hungarian laws and guidelines that concern the protection of minorities. As the Hungarian news agency MTI reported, this discussion in connection with the continuing accession talks of Ukraine to the European Union is important, since both countries contradict themselves in fundamental values.
