Hungary prohibits Pride parade: escalate political protests!
In Hungary, a new law causes excitement: On March 18, 2025, the Hungarian parliament decided with 136 to 27 votes a drastic change in the meeting law, which banned the meetings of homosexuals, including the Pride Parade. Prime Minister Viktor Orbán had previously announced this ban, which led to violent criticism both in Germany and internationally. The law was decided in the urgent procedure, while the opposition party Momentum in parliament drew attention to its protest with the throwing of smoke candles. According to tt.com due to the smoke even had to be treated by a doctor.
The government justifies the measure with the protection of minors. According to the new law, every assembly must correspond to the Child Protection Act that has been in force since 2021 and excludes children and adolescents from access to information about non -heterosexual forms of life. In the event of violations of this ban, there are high fines. In order to determine the identity of the participants at any illegal events, facial recognition software is to be used, such as "https://www.vienna.at/gesetz-zum-ver-pride-parade-in-ungarn-kahlen/9284033"> vienna.at . These measures are in direct contradiction to human rights and were referred to by Amnesty International as the "frontal attack on LGBTQIA+ Community". The director of Amnesty International Hungary, Dávid Vig, denounced the flimsy justification of child protection and asked President Tamás Sulyok not to sign the law.
The opposition is already planning further protests against these repressive measures. The opposition Momentum party has announced a rally in front of the parliament for Tuesday afternoon to mobilize against the decisions of the Orbán government. These developments throw a dark shadow over the LGBTQIA+ rights in Hungary and illustrate the political tensions in the country.
