Spye shock: Austria Reformed secret service law at a rapid pace!
The Austrian government under the Minister of Justice Alma Zadić has decided to change spy cases that have been on the agenda since the recovery of allegations against the former constitutional protector Egisto Ott. Although a law on the reform of the "Secret Intelligence Service to the Disadvantage of Austria" was originally sought, the adjustment is now made by decree. Zadić, who is currently represented by Health Minister Johannes Rauch during her baby break, gives the public prosecutors the instruction of further interpreting the existing espionage paragraph (paragraph 256 of the Criminal Code) and also covering spy treatments against other EU member states and international organizations, such as the reported the press
Advanced spy regulations
So far, the paragraph only provided for punishments for spy, which happened directly to the disadvantage of the Republic of Austria. Critics complain that this regulation was too closely stated because it does not adequately take into account the reality of spy in a country that houses numerous international organizations and is considered the linchpin of East-West relationships. Zadić's enactment should now also record espionage acts against other EU countries and organizations such as the UN or OSCE, since such activities could endanger Austria's reputation as a safe location. The decree of decree alone only obliges public prosecutors, while courts are still not bound to these requirements. This means that no binding legal framework is created in order to effectively punish any violations.Current provisions assume that espionage and the associated punishments can only be punished effectively if the disadvantage is obvious to Austria. In the future, however, the violation of Austria will also be a criterion, even if the espionage is directed against other states or international institutions, reports the Kleine Zeitung . This procedure could potentially influence the political climate and relationships of Austria to other countries and could ensure a turn in the handling of spy cases in the country.
