Politics sleeps! Protest campaign for more animal welfare in Klagenfurt

On Tuesday morning, the association protested against animal factories (VGT) in Klagenfurt with an impressive "sleeping campaign" against the conditions in pig farming. This protest fell together with the upcoming resolution of the National Council for the new regulation of the "full column floor". Activists of the VGT lie down on the pitch in order to clarify that politicians "oversleep" a modern, animal-friendly pig farming, as oe24.at reports.

The new law provides for a shortened transition period for the ban on the unstructured full column floor, but according to VGT, two thirds of the stable areas remain allowed with full columns, and this without mandatory straw litter. Critics argue that such regulations will hardly bring improvements to animal welfare. In particular, the fact that an originally adopted ban is replaced by a less animal protection -friendly version that is to apply from 2034 is due to violent criticism. This is a clear step back for animal rights activists.

The decision of the National Council

On June 1, the amended version of the Animal Welfare Act comes into force. As ots.at, the change to pig farming was largely decided in the National Council. The new regulations provide for shortened transition periods and hardship regulations to meet the interests of affected companies.

The FPÖ approved the changes, but criticized the brevity of the transition periods and demanded extensive food labeling. The Greens also expressed concerns about the lack of minimum standards that were rejected in their application. A planned package of measures for animal -friendly pig farming also did not find a majority. According to State Secretary, Ulrike Königsberger-Ludwig, the shortened deadlines are a good solution for animal welfare and planning security.

criticism and demands of animal rights activists

The novella encounters sharp criticism from various animal welfare groups. Thomas Schröder, President of the German Animal Welfare Association, described the draft law as a lazy compromise. He criticizes that the project does not meet the wishes of the citizens after more animal welfare and demands that the state goal to take animal welfare seriously and to implement them consistently. The cluping of the ringing tails, originally part of the new regulations, also ensures dispute because this provision has been deleted again. According to agrarheute.com, animal welfare associations also criticize the regulations for connecting cattle, since they are not implemented in the sense of animal welfare.

In summary, it can be stated that social and political action is necessary to achieve real improvements in animal welfare. The VGT calls for adherence to the existing ban and the development of new minimum standards for pig farming until 2027. The wake -up call of the protest in Klagenfurt remains: "Time to awake!"
