New Teleworking Act: Flexible working in Austria from 2025!
A couple from Upper Austria suffered a significant loss of wages of around 13,000 euros in just four months. According to a report by 5min.at, the two, who were employed as waiters and kitchen assistants in an inn in the Ried district, only partially received legal payments. In addition to the incomplete wages, vacation compensation and overtime pay also remained unpaid. After the landlord ignored two written interventions from the Chamber of Labor, the case was brought before the Labor and Social Court, where the couple was ultimately awarded the following amounts: the man received almost 7,600 euros and the woman received around 5,800 euros.
In another aspect affecting the world of work, the Chamber of Labor is planning numerous changes for 2025, as highlighted in a report by arbeiterkammer.at. One of the most important innovations is the introduction of the telework law. This law replaces the previous regulations on home offices and allows employees to work remotely in various environments, including parks and coworking spaces. The prerequisite for this flexibility is an agreement between employers and employees, which opens up new opportunities for work organization. In addition, attention is drawn to protection in the event of accidents during such activities, which currently still needs to be optimized.
New developments in labor law
In addition, with the entry into force of the one-way deposit system from January 1, 2025, a new deposit will be introduced in Austria on plastic bottles and beverage cans, which applies to both retail and online retail. This is part of larger collection efforts to reduce plastic waste and promote recycling. Such legal changes underscore an increasing focus on sustainability and workers' rights, which will continue to gain importance in the coming years.
The outlook for 2025 also shows increasing costs for the population in the form of increased electricity and heating costs as the electricity cost subsidy ends. These financial aspects must also be taken into account when planning the budget, while at the same time new opportunities arise through the telework law.
