Financial fiasco: Verden district is fighting clinic bankruptcy!
The German hospital landscape faces enormous financial challenges. Peter Bohlmann, the district administrator of the Verden district, has expressed his concerns about the new "Hospital Insurance Act" (KHVVVG). This law comes into force from January 2025, but Bohlmann is convinced that it will not bring any relief for municipal hospitals such as the All-Weser Clinic. This comes at a time when the financing gap in the district budget is estimated at 31 million euros. In recent years, the district has had to pay considerable grants to keep the clinics going, and the pressure is growing increasingly, since other circles such as the Heidekreis also report similar deficits as the Kreiszeitung reported.
The burdens for the municipalities are reinforced by the refusal of the federal government to provide short -term “bridging financing”. This Situation means that many hospitals, especially in rural areas, are under the pressure of closures and financial bankruptcy. There is a threat of a profound crisis in which the closure of clinics would also have a negative impact on the quality of the emergency services. The affected person, Bohlmann, has vehemently performed against the reform together with the Lower Saxony district council and is calling for greater financial support from the federal government, as well as Dasskrankenhaus.de
The financial bottlenecks in the municipal households are alarming. In order to ensure the operation of the hospitals, billions of bills flow from the district funds to the clinics annually. In 2023, for example, 6 billion euros nationwide were spent on loss comparison, and the tendency shows that these expenses will continue to increase. Bohlmann warned that if the gaps in the financing are not closed, many hospitals continue to have massive deficits and are threatened from the final. The inadequate support not only appears as a lack of political foresight, but could ultimately also result in negative consequences for health care as a whole.
