Financial equalization conference: Tyrol and Carinthia united for solutions!

Tyrol and Carinthia face challenges in the current financial equalization, which according to Carinthia's Governor Peter Kaiser and Tirol's governor Anton Mattle has to be revised. Kaiser commented that the current percentage distribution is no longer sufficient and the federal states and municipalities put it into a tense situation, while Mattle emphasized that measures are now required for a new law. "If this only happens shortly before the negotiations, it is too late," says Mattle, who underlined the need for rapid action before it is too late, as reported.

In 2023, 18.3 billion euros flowed as part of the federal financial equalization in order to compensate for the different financial strength of the federal states and thus stabilize their households. This redistribution is carried out by supply and discount on the respective sales tax shares, with financial weak countries being supported by federal supplementary allocations (BEL), a total of around 10 billion euros. The compensation is important to ensure the performance of the countries and to avoid overloading the taxpayers, such as the Federal Ministry of Finance.

The measures also include investments in public transport that are crucial for the economic success of the regions. Gruber from the Carinthian government called for an adjustment of the financing key so that the financial burdens are not distributed unevenly. Furthermore, cross -border cooperation is sought, especially in the tourism sector, in order to increase the attractiveness for regular guests and at the same time improve insurance benefits for city dwellers. Kaiser sees the development of cultural highlights great potential for the region and the local industry in order to be able to survive in European competition.
