Right -wing extremism in Upper Austria: alarming numbers and demands!

In alarming developments in the fight against right-wing extremism, the Mauthausen Committee (MKÖ) and the Upper Austrian network against racism and right-wing extremism (Antifa network) criticize the persistently high increase in right-wing extremists. According to MKÖ chairman Willi Mernyi, there was an increase of 30 percent between 2022 and 2023 in the event of such crimes, which led to a record of 1,208 incidents such as Nazi re-actuation, Holocaust reference and contraception. The first half of 2024 indicates that this worrying trend continues, so that the numbers are expected to be even higher, such as APA-OTS reports .

Inadequate government measures

Especially Upper Austria is affected, which is constantly at the head of the federal states in right -wing extremists. In 2023 there were 252 such incidents. The neo-Nazis specifically attacked concentration camp memorials such as Mauthausen, which were desecrated over 38 times without one of these crimes being informed. Robert Eiter from the Antifa network criticizes the failure of the police and the protection of the constitution. In an urgent appeal, the organizations from the new government are calling for the creation and quick implementation of a national action plan against right -wing extremism. However, this was never realized in 2016, although the National Council voted for this in June 2021 with a large majority. Mernyi warns the government to recognize the urgency of this task and to act determined as "there is a fire on the roof".

Supported by the need for better coordination of combating right -wing extremist ideologies, a supplementary action plan is necessary to be reconciled with the existing strategies against anti -Semitism and theadicalization measures. The call for more clear and effective measures is urgent to protect society from this threat, as is carried out in the action plan of the Federal Ministry of the Interior. In this, coordinated steps are planned to combat right -wing extremism, but it remains to be seen how quickly and efficiently these measures are implemented in order to defuse the worrying situation
