Art by upheaval: Itay Tiran about the challenges in Israel
In an exciting artistic réunion, Itay Tiran brings two outstanding works to perform during the Vienna Festwochen. His staging of Shakespeare's "Richard III", which was created in 2023 in Israel, will be performed from May 21 to 23, 2025 and begins with a techno party on the stage that reminds the audience of the tragic events of the Nova Party, in which Hamas carried out a massacre. This presentation, which enables deeper reflection on power and political will formation in the polarized society described by Tiran, deals with the "crippled society" in which Richard III moves. The staging is accompanied by German and English overtitles and causes great excitement in advance, since it is also placed in the same context with a guest performance by "Die Perser", a Palestinian-Israeli production, as vienna.at reported.
But that doesn't remain the only important topic that is treated in Vienna. In the Josefstadt chamber games, the latest part of Ferdinand von Schirach, which deals with a complex court trial, opens the season. The story revolves around an affair between a successful man and a woman who ultimately flows into a dilemma: Who says the truth when it comes to consent? The staging, under the direction of Sandra Cervik, not only illuminates legal questions, but also the social values and prejudices that are connected to such a case. With great actors, including Joseph Lorenz and Martina Stilp, the audience becomes a captivating discussion of a topic that moves society. This dramatization promises, in the spirit of Schirach, to become an urgent experience that will remember the audience for a long time, such as josefstadt.org
