Blood act in Villach: Interior Minister announces the press conference after a knife attack

In a shocking incident in Villach, Carinthia, a 23-year-old Syrian citizen stabbed passers-by on Saturday afternoon. The cruel attack led to the killing of a 14-year-old student and injured at least five other people, two of them seriously, as the police confirmed. The Interior Minister Gerhard Karner (ÖVP) and other political decision -makers have already announced a press conference to inform about the crime, reports OE24

The incident occurred near the main square of Villach, where the perpetrator struck with a folding knife that had a ten centimeter long blade. An attentive meal deliverer from Syria noticed the attack and stopped the attacker with his car, which enabled the police to arrest the perpetrator quickly. The attacker, who has not previously appeared police, could possibly have suffered from psychological problems. The police currently have no secure information on a possible motive, and investigations to determine whether there is a terrorist background, as reported.

The cruel incident caused horror in both politics and in the society. Carinthia's Governor Peter Kaiser (SPÖ) expressed his shocking and demanded that such atrocities have to result in stricter consequences. Kaiser appealed to the need for restrictive migration policy, but pointed out that generalizations were disproportionate and counterproductive. The chairman of the FPÖ, Herbert Kickl, spoke of a "system failure of the first quality" and emphasized the urgency of his migration policy. SPÖ chairman Andreas Babler also demanded that the full hardness of the law have to be used to prevent such crimes.
