Trust in science increases: What does that mean for Austria?

A current survey of the science barometer of the Austrian Academy of Sciences (ÖAW) shows that trust in science in Austria has increased to 73 percent. This corresponds to an increase of 3 percentage points compared to the previous year. The proportion of respondents who trust "very strongly" has increased by 6 percentage points. ÖAW President Heinz Faßmann expressed a positive statement about this increase and led factors such as the latest Nobel Price Award to Austrian researchers and the withdrawal of all Corona measures as potential reasons.

The survey carried out by the Gallup Institute with 1,500 people also shows that 77 percent of those surveyed in faith that science and research would improve life, which corresponds to an increase of 7 percent. 80 percent support state grants for science and research, an increase of 4 percent compared to the previous year. In addition, 91 percent of participants have positive or neutral associations with the terms science and research.

declining interest and skepticism

The survey has also shown that a significant part of the population, around half, expresses the desire to receive more information about scientific topics. In addition, 15 percent of the respondents feel too little informed about artificial intelligence (AI). A third has a "rather" or "very negative" view of AI. Overall, there is a complex picture: While trust in science is growing, skepticism and disinterest in certain population groups, such as Exxpress.at reports. Also oeaw.ac.at emphasizes that "systemically dissatisfied" show less interest in science and have dissatisfied significantly less trust in scientific concerns.
