Laimgrubengasse 10, 1060 Wien, Österreich - The exhibition “Suburbia. Life in American Dream” will be opened on March 5, 2025 in the Vienna Architecture Center. The show curated by Philipp Engel examines the phenomenon of the American dream that manifests itself in the suburbs of the United States. This exhibition emphasizes the contradictions and social and ecological consequences within the model, which transports idealized images of a life with single -family houses, gardens and a quiet lifestyle, as described in the press release of the architectural center. The American dream is not only celebrated here, but also critically questioned, especially in view of the rapidly increasing settlement in Austria, which has stunted according to a BOKU study since 1975.
Historical materials, photographs and everyday objects are provided on extensive space in order to tell the history of the single -family house and invite you to reflect on future forms of living. It becomes clear that many people in this country also have the desire to realize their own version of this dream on the outskirts. Together with the thematic expansion to Austria, the exhibition encourages discussions about the challenges and opportunities associated with this form of living. The exhibition is open daily from 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. from March 6 to August 4, 2025, which enables a historical examination of the cultural history of living in Austrian cities.
