Revolutionary initiative for the dental health of Vienna's little ones!
Wien, Österreich - The promotion of early childhood oral health in Vienna is taking an important step. On June 4, 2025, the “Tippedtop. Healthy in the Mouth and Corporation” initiative announced that Viennese health promotion (WIG) will support families with wrap backpacks. These backpacks not only contain information about dental care and a baby tooth cleaning set, but also the children's book "Mia and the tooth Vampire". This offer is aimed at parents of children aged 0 to 12 years.
The initiative is the result of the cooperation between the Vienna Health Promotion, the Austrian Health Insurance Fund (ÖGK) and the State Dentistry Association for Vienna. Every year, 15,000 diaper backpacks are distributed to Viennese families, so that around 100,000 children can benefit from around 1,300 facilities, including kindergartens and schools. The program sought the early promotion of oral health, which is of central importance for the healthy development of young people.
Important information on dental health
The program also offers targeted support in kindergartens and elementary schools. There, children receive instructions on mouth and dental care from experts in oral health. They are also informed about healthy eating and sufficient exercise. The parents and caregivers are supported by easily understandable, sometimes multilingual materials in order to strengthen the knowledge of dental health. According to a tooth status raising from Health Austria GmbH from 2023/24, only around 54% of six-year-old children are caries-free in Vienna, which underlines the urgency of such measures. In the context of "Tipptopp", oral health should be significantly improved by behavior -related measures.
The program is implemented by Vienna's health promotion, while Proges acts as a implementation partner. The other activities include the Viennese tooth theater, which performs around 80 performances in elementary schools and middle schools every year in order to raise awareness of children in an entertaining way. There are workshops for supervisors who serve to strengthen their oral health competence and thus also promote the health competence of the childcare children.
Promote equal opportunities
The overarching objective of the program is to improve oral health in children and adolescents as well as the reduction of health inequality. Special attention applies to strengthening health competence, not only among the children, but also among parents and caregivers. The accompanying research shows that early dental accompaniment from the sixth month of life and the consistent dental care are already crucial for oral health when the first tooth. Experts warn that the mother's dental problems can also have negative effects on the unborn person during pregnancy, which emphasizes the need for preventive measures again.
