Klimt's secrets: What is hidden among the masterpieces?
A spectacular interplay of art, research and the latest technology is currently celebrated in the lower Belvedere in Vienna. The new exhibition "Gustav Klimt - Pigment & Pixel" presents the astonishing results of scientific studies that deal with the mysterious layers behind Klimt's masterpieces. General Director Stella Rollig emphasizes: "We use artistic methods to immerse yourself in the painting layers and explore the artist's way of working." Methods such as infrared reflectography and X -rays are used, which even uncover two over -painted chickens in the famous work "after the rain", such as Kleine Zeitung reported.
A main focus of the exhibition is on the so -called faculty pictures, which were once created for the ballroom of the University of Vienna and was lost in 1945. Fortunately, only black and white photographs were preserved. In an innovative project, Google Arts & Culture and the Belvedere worked together to reconstruct the original colors of these works with the help of artificial intelligence. These innovations now allow visitors to admire the colorful images in their original splendor again, which, according to curator Franz Smola, is also of great importance for research. He first counts how the once provocative colors throw a new light on the scandal that the faculty pictures triggered at their time, as also from OTS was reported.

The exhibition consists of different rooms that introduce the visitor to the diverse way of working climatic. Methods of reconstruction and the representations of its golden period, which is particularly visible in Klimt's famous “Judith and Holofernes”, are supplemented by impressive microscope recordings and UV light photographs.
