Kalkofen in the open -air museum: Historical craft awakens to new life!
Großgmain, Österreich - The historical lime in Freilichtmuseum Salzburg is heated again after almost two decades! At the end of June 2025 the time has come: The more than a hundred year old oven is activated for the "Kalk.Kultur" event to produce the traditional building material lime. This ancient construction technology already has its roots in the Bronze Age and is so important that it produced entire buildings during the novel. The return of the lime fire is not only celebrated as a spectacle, but also serves to restore your own museum building and the legendary Hohensalzburg fortress, as museum director Peter Fritz explains.
To convey a deep understanding of the unique brandy, the open -air museum will organize a festival around the lime kiln. Interested parties can experience the process up close and even actively help. "You want to wear the knowledge of lime and its advantages outwards," said Fritz. The limestone fire, which will be in continuous operation for several days, attracts international guests to research to explore which old construction methods can also be inspiring for contemporary architecture. In addition, the oldest craft is re -examined as part of this, which is still practiced in these walls.
preparations for the 2025 season
The open -air museum opens its gates on March 19 and again expects around 100,000 visitors. Many are particularly excited about the buildings, some of which are several hundred years old, that give a unique insight into the life in Salzburg in the past 400 years. In addition to the limestone, there are also extensive renovation work. The roof of the Mesnerhaus is newly covered with 23,000 handmade wooden shingles. In addition, a wooden warehouse removed from the Gneis district of Salzburg will be rebuilt by the end of March. A new entrance area, which will accommodate the health insurers, the archive and the library of the museum, is to be opened in 2026, caused by an investment of the State of Salzburg of a total of 6.9 million euros, such as Salzburg24 reported.
