Glacier under pressure: Alarming declines in the Austrian Alpine region!
Olympiastraße 37, 6020 Innsbruck, Österreich - The Austrian Alpine Association will hold a decisive press conference on February 27, 2025 to present the alarming results of its current glacier report. In view of the "International Year to protect the glaciers", which was proclaimed by the United Nations, the drastic declines of the glaciers in Austria and their importance are addressed for the climate. The presentation is broadcast on site in Innsbruck and in the livestream. This event is characterized by increasing global warming, which ensures that glaciers melt faster than ever before. The Alpine Club documents these critical changes for over 130 years and thus shows the consequences of climate change.
The current report examined 90 glaciers in Austria. A look at the terrifying figures shows that the Pasterze in the Glockner Group recorded the greatest return with a loss of 203.5 meters, followed by the Rettenbachferner and SexGertenferner in the Ötztal Alps with declines of 127 and 93.7 meters. According to the data of the Alpine Association, the average retreat of the 79 measured glaciers in the reporting period was 23.9 meters. This marks the third highest value since the start of the measurements 133 years ago, and all three highest declines have been reached in the past seven years, as the detailed analysis of this alarming trend shows. As expected, media representatives are invited to the event that want to illuminate the glacier report more precisely, while comprehensive photo and information material is made available.
The meaning of this research cannot be emphasized enough; Glaciers that shape the alpine landscape are crucial for the water cycle and climate protection. The inventory of the glaciers therefore not only has scientific value, but also a global urgency that becomes increasingly relevant in the light of climate change. The press conference takes place at Olympiastraße 37 in Innsbruck, whereby registration is required. Detailed information on the situation of the glaciers are available in the more complete analysis of the glacier report, as reported alpine association.at.
