A life for music: Legend Eberhard Würzl celebrates history!

Wien, Österreich - On September 11, 2003, Eberhard Würzl died, an outstanding personality in Austrian music and education history. Born on November 1, 1915 in Vienna, he went through impressive training: he attended the high school in Seitenstetten as a singing boy and completed his Matura in 1935 at the federal teacher training institution in Vienna's first district. The passionate musician trained at the Academy of Music and Performing Art in Vienna and made a career with his skills as an organist, music theorist and composer. After his teaching examination in November 1939, he was moved into the German Wehrmacht in 1940 and came to Soviet captivity from which he returned in 1947.

From 1948 to 1961, Würzl taught as a music teacher at the Vienna Federal Real Gymnasium Stubenbastei before being appointed specialist inspector of music education in the city school council for Vienna in 1961. Through his appointment as a professor of music education at the Academy for Music and Performing Art Vienna in 1976, he shaped generations of musicians. His commitment in various Austrian musical institutions, coupled with his research on the life and work of Johann Strauss (son), led to his doctorate in 1987 to Dr. phil. at the University of Vienna.
