World peace in danger: Conflicts and violence achieve new highs!

The current Global Peace Index (GPI) 2025 shows an alarming decline in the global situation. Information from the Institute for Economics & Peace (IEP) ots clarify that many indicators are going on since the highest level of conflicts are. The GPI evaluates 163 independent states and territories and has recorded a steady increase in global violence in the past ten years. This is in accordance with the findings of Bootcamp Military Fitness Institute, which emphasize the systematic use of international data.

The 59 active state conflicts, the highest number since the end of the war in Europe, are among the most worrying numbers. In 2024, 152,000 conflict -related deaths were documented, and 17 countries each reported over 1,000 deaths from internal conflicts, the highest number since 1999. These developments not only result in human tragedies, but also significantly burden the global economy. The economic consequences of violence amounted to astonishing $ 19.97 trillion in 2024, which corresponds to 11.6 % of global GDP.

geopolitical tensions and their effects

The geopolitical tensions have an impact on safety and stability in many regions. The data show that 78 countries are involved in conflicts outside their borders, which increases the complexity of the global position. While the peace situation improved in 74 countries, it deteriorated in 87, which reflects a clear trend towards fragmentation of the global order. Bafin emphasizes that such geopolitical risks also cause economic costs, for example by increasing energy prices and problems in the supply chains.

The technological change in warfare is particularly worrying. The conflict in Ukraine is seen as a test field for new technologies, especially in drone production. These developments have the potential to fundamentally change the dynamics of conflicts. Western Europe and Central Europe are currently maintaining the status as the most peaceful regions, with Iceland at the top as the most peaceful country since 2008, while Russia takes the top of the least peaceful countries.

peacekeeping and global challenges

The global expenditure for peacekeeping has been at the lowest level in over two decades, making up only 0.52 % of military spending. This is in a strong contrast to military spending itself, which was $ 2.7 trillion in 2024. The GPI uses 23 indicators to evaluate peacefulness, which take into account both internal conflicts and political instability. Nevertheless, the index also points to positive peace factors how well -functioning governments and lower corruption rates.

In summary, it can be said that the GPI 2025 conveys a picture of a world in which conflicts increase and the peace situation deteriorates. The influence of geopolitical upheavals on the economic and political environment becomes increasingly noticeable, while the international community is faced with the challenge of developing strategies to improve the global peace situation.
