Movement in old age: This is how your body remains fit and vital!

Dominic Günther, the movement coordinator of the Vogelsberg district, began on January 10, 2025 with his lecture series "Movement in old age". The aim of this initiative is to highlight the essential importance of movement in old age. In the past two years, Günther has visited over 20 senior afternoons in Vogelsbergkreis to bring the advantages of physical activity closer to the elderly.

Günther makes it clear that the regularity of movement not only receives quality of life and independence in old age, but also relieves pain and promotes mental Fitness. Important aspects of movement in old age are the health system, biological age, fall prophylaxis and the existing club landscape. Practical exercises are presented in the lectures that help seniors to move safely in everyday life. According to Günther, long phases of seating should be avoided and interrupted by physical activities.

The Federal Center for Health Education (BZGA) recommends at least 2.5 hours of endurance -oriented movement per week, which corresponds to about 21 minutes per day. In addition, it is advisable to carry out strength and equilibrium exercises on two or more days a week. The “Get Healthy and Active older” program focuses on promoting movement to prevent diseases and need for care.

The BZGA also offers an “everyday training program” for people aged 65 and over, which includes support in the form of practice videos for at home and tips on healthy hiking. Other topics that are treated are prevention and education in relation to dementia, visual and hearing problems as well as increased blood pressure and depression.
