Wismar cheers: 30 million euros in trade taxes despite the dark forecast!
The Hanseatic city of Wismar has experienced a surprising turn in terms of its trade tax revenue. A decline of 10 million euros was originally expected for the current year, which meant that the city would only take 20 million euros. This dark forecast was already presented by Mayor Beyer at the beginning of the summer.
But there are currently gratifying: through unexpected additional payments from previous years, Wismar now has the opportunity to achieve the forecast 30 million euros in trade taxes. This sudden upswing comes at the right time, since the city can now also pay the higher circular levy, which was announced by the district of Northwest Mecklenburg.
financial relief from additional payments
The additional payments result from changes or corrections in the tax assessment from previous years. In local politics, it is not uncommon for such unexpected payments to arise, which can affect both plans and create scope. The expected receipt of the 30 million euros makes it possible for Wismar to meet their obligations and at the same time maintain the necessary financial basis.
Since the city receives more tax revenue, however, it is not neglected that the district levy is now being adjusted. Instead of the previous 39.6 percent, which should be transmitted to the district by the tax revenue, this percentage is increased to 42.5 percent. This means that a larger proportion of tax revenue must flow into the district's coffers.
This development will be specified in the next few months, since the district levy is to be decided retrospectively. This presents Wismar a double challenge: On the one hand, the additional income must be carefully managed in order to avoid possible future deficits. On the other hand, careful planning is also necessary to use the new financial framework as optimally as possible.
The positive news about trade taxes could also be important for further investments and projects within the city of Wismar, since a stable financial tailwind opens up many options. Nevertheless, it remains to be seen how the city government will use this additional financial freedom and whether the new challenges can be managed in the long term due to the increased circular levy.
