Security in online tax compensation: new login rules from October!

In the spring of 2025 it will be serious for the Austrians: the tax equalization is just around the corner, in which many citizens and companies can get thousands of euros back for 2024. The digital platform Finanzonline is used, which will soon experience some important changes, as the Ministry of Finance announced. From October 1, 2025, the login at Finanzonline will only be possible with a mandatory 2-factor authentication. This increased security measure is intended to significantly improve the protection of personal data in connection with tax matters, as Finance Minister Gunter Mayr emphasizes. Until then, the tax equalization can be carried out as usual without having to make immediate adjustments, according to the reporting of 5min.at.

Details on 2-factor authentication

The 2-factor authentication (2FA) requires an additional confirmation step in addition to the usual access data. Users who already use the ID Austria benefit from a simplified registration because no new registration is necessary. This digital identity is also valid for numerous other applications of authorities and companies and was replaced in December 2023 by the "Handysignature" app. Alternatively, users who do not want to use the ID Austria can set up 2FA directly in Finanzonline, for which a smartphone with an authenticator app is necessary, such as Google or Microsoft Authenticator.

readers are advised to prepare for the upcoming changes at an early stage. From February 2025, a step-by-step instructions will be displayed when entering Finanzonline, which supports users in registration and refers to the use of the ID Austria. Information on the online preamplifier for the ID Austria is also available; A valid ID, a smartphone and a current passport photo are necessary for this, as the Federal Ministry of Finance informed.
