Prof. Borkowetz takes over: Urology of the University Medical Center Rostock during the start!

In a significant change in personnel at the University Medical Center Rostock, Prof. Dr. Angelika Borkowetz took over the management of the urological clinic and polyclinic. The 41-year-old follows Prof. Dr. Oliver Hakenberg, who retired in early October. Borkowetz brings an abundance of experience and specialist knowledge into her new role, especially from her last position as deputy director at the University Hospital of the TU Dresden.

dr. Christiane Stehle, the CEO of the University Medical Center Rostock, emphasizes Borkowetz ’qualifications. She describes her as a "excellent doctor and scientist". Your knowledge of robot -based surgery and your expertise in transplant surgery are viewed as a valuable asset for the team. This could significantly strengthen the position of urology in Rostock and enrich the transplant center.

strategic priorities and research

In its function, Borkowetz wants to focus on her initial phase. This includes building an operational and conservative Urooncological center, which is intended to further develop the area of cancer treatment in urology. In addition, she plans to further integrate modern minimally invasive processes and robotics, which will benefit the patient. The focus is also on strengthening the kidney transplantation and the establishment of a urological research laboratory to promote biomarker and basic research.

The new director also expressed the desire to intensify interdisciplinary cooperation with other disciplines in order to develop extensive therapy concepts for the patients. She also has plans to initiate innovative learning concepts for medical students in order to promote their interest in urology and to present the field as difficult but exciting.

Angelika Borkowetz is a native of Munich and was brought up in the Rhine-Main area and in Jena. After studying human medicine in Jena from 2003 to 2011, she began her career at the University Hospital Dresden, where she promptly worked up in the hierarchy. In 2019 she habilitated and took on the role of the deputy clinic director and senior physician in 2021.

This appointment is an important step for the faculty, because it follows a long term of Prof. Hakenberg, who has acted as a director since 2006 and has contributed significantly to the development of the clinic.
