Bückeburg's debt explosion: 26 million by 2025 threaten!

Bückeburg. In the town hall there is currently little reason to be happy: The city's debt. The debts are currently on 10.7 million euros, but by the end of 2025, an increase will be forecast to EUR 26.4 million. This was communicated by Jürgen Sobotta, the Head of Finance.

The messages are not only worrying, but should also be a wake -up call. A shortfall of 8 million euros in the earnings budget was calculated. Nevertheless, the administration does not plan any tax increases to avoid further burdens for the citizens. The presentation of the administrative draft for the 2024 budget recently took place in the Committee on Economics, Finance and Digitization, but the question remains: Why does Bückeburg get into this debt -rich situation that affects many cities in Germany?

The high deficiency and its causes

The causes of the rising deficit are diverse. One main factor is the strongly declining key assignments that the city receives from the general financial equalization with a decline of 4.2 million euros. In addition, the deficit in the area of childcare, including cribs and kindergartens, will be a whopping 6.7 million euros next year. The increased personnel costs, due to high tariff degrees, as well as the inevitable increase in energy and general material costs also lead to a significant burden on the urban budget, explains Sobotta.

Interestingly, despite this tense financial situation, it is planned to maintain the city's voluntary services - for example grants for sport, culture and youth work - at the previous level. This decision could be considered unclear if you consider the financial bottlenecks, but the city apparently wants to stick to these social benefits.

Investments and the future risk

Some of the challenges result from the Wacitory Chances Act and significant investments in the renovation of schools and the establishment of new institutions. These investments, including the renovations of primary schools on the Harrl, Eleves and Meinsen as well as the construction of a new day care center, add up to a total of 16.57 million euros in 2025. The problem is that all of these projects have to be financed in terms of foreign

Although reserves of around 22 million euros are currently available, the financial projections indicate that these reserves will be used up quickly due to negative development. Politicians are therefore responsible for taking suitable consolidation measures to avoid future budget deficits.

But time is urgent: the adoption of the budget for 2025 is scheduled for the council meeting in December. The further course is discussed in the respective specialist committees, whereby politics is now required to find solutions so that the city does not get any deeper into the debt trap.
