Ampel coalition in the crisis: Who takes the step to election?

The traffic light coalition in Austria is on the edge of the abyss! Current surveys from the Lazarsfeld Society show a worrying picture for ÖVP, SPÖ and Neos. Together, the three parties only reach a wafer -thin majority of 50%, which makes the coalition the first government of the world, which has already lost its survey before taking office. The FPÖ, on the other hand, rises incessantly and has now reached a record of 36%. These developments ask serious questions to the traffic light parties: Do you want to continue to rule at all costs or should you think about alternatives? Hardly anyone sees light at the end of the tunnel for this Allianz criticized as a dispute coalition, which urgently needs reforms.

coalition talks under pressure

But there is movement! According to reports from negotiators, Chancellor Karl Nehammer wants to dry the new government until the beginning of next year. The longer the talks take, the more urgent the calls become after new elections, which the ÖVP does not want in any circumstances. The tense financial situation, which does not give the parties much scope, is particularly problematic. In order to keep the citizens from a possible standstill, the intensive coalition negotiations should also be continued over the holidays. An insider tip from NEOS assures that the conversations are on the right track - however, the question remains whether a stable consensus can be achieved before there is an impending chaos.

The dispute over finances remains a central bone of contord in the negotiations. The future government would have to seriously deal with new tax measures in order to get the massive budget deficit under control. Nehammer has already declared this to be a “chief thing” and relies on intensive discussions with the party leader and their most important negotiators in order to finally make progress. However, if the coalition fails, new elections threaten, which in particular demands the FPÖ. The next steps could be crucial for the continued existence of the traffic light coalition, and the clocks tick!
