Filmmuseum celebrates 80 years of concentration camp exemption with a moving film series

Vienna, Österreich - A moving film series in the Filmmuseum Vienna commemorates the 80-year liberation of the concentration camps, in cooperation with the Mauthausen concentration camp memorial. The series entitled "Liberation! New start?" illuminates the fate of concentration camp survivors and addresses the traumatic experiences, which often result in a difficult transition to "normal" life. The free admission to the five films supplemented with expert introductions enables a wide audience to deal with this important topic. On February 16, "L’Heure de la Vérité" by Henri Calef will be shown, in which a former SS man tries to hide his identity after the war, which leads to a dramatic discovery.

Another look at the Holocaust

In addition to the film program, the film museum shows the documentary essay film "Occupied City" by Steve McQueen on February 23 on the occasion of the international commemoration day to the victims of the Holocaust. This impressive film has its roots in the book "Atlas of An Occupied City, Amsterdam 1940-1945" by Bianca Stigter and offers a deep insight into the occupation of the Second World War using the example of Amsterdam. By visiting McQueen over 2,000 places in the city, he manages to link the story with the present, and thus conveys an urgent image of a stratified society as well as the individual stories of resistance and betrayal.

without archive material and interviews, but through urgent stories, the film brings the past to life and at the same time reflects on the challenges of today, especially during Corona pandemic, when the filming took place. The choice of the places and the associated stories invite you to deal with the history and its noticeable effects today, which underlines the meaning of "Occupied City", such as Eyefilm.nl emphasized.
