Ralph Pezzey from the fire prevention center urges: "The dry branches represent a significant danger." According to the overall association of the German Insurance Industry (GDV), the frequently occurring Advent fire leads to average damage amounts of 2,300 euros per fire. Setting up a Christmas tree before December 24th only increases the risk if the candles are inflamed.

There are simple but life -saving measures: Christmas trees must be stable and have at least one meter distance to curtains and furniture. Candles should only be lit down from the top of the tree; Burned down should be replaced in good time. Pezzey also recommends that never leave the fireplace unattended and to regularly supply the tree with water to keep the needles fresh. Instead of real candles, LED light chains could be a safe alternative.
The same applies to advent wreaths: if the branches are dry, the flames of the candles can spread unhindered. The GDV and the "The Safe House" campaign advise you to exchange the wreaths regularly and avoid dangerous decorations such as grinding made of flammable material. Space and smoke detectors complete the safety precautions and not only protect against bad damage at Christmas.
