Chernobyl under fire: Serious attack threatens nuclear safety!

A serious attack on the Chernobyl nuclear power plant has raised alarm and raised massive concerns about nuclear safety in Ukraine. On February 14, the protective shell of the nuclear power plant was hit by a Russian drone, which exploded and went through the roof. This led to significant fires that were not officially declared extinguished until March 7, while firefighters remain on heightened alert. According to a report by Cosmo This incident shows how uncertain the situation around Chernobyl and the Zaporizhia nuclear power plant is.

Severe damage from the attack

The consequences of the attack are serious: the protective shell, also known as the “New Safe Confinement” (NSC), suffered significant damage; 50 percent of the north and south roofs as well as the side walls were affected. Artem Siriy, lead engineer on the project, fears that snow and rain intrusion could further endanger the structures. This could cause corrosion and compromise the functionality of the protective cover, resulting in the need for costly repairs, reported OTS.

Jan Vande Putte, a nuclear expert at Greenpeace Ukraine, called the attack potentially one of the most serious war crimes against Ukraine and expressed concern about the future security of the project. A clear path to repairing the damage is still unclear, which is why the protective cover may have to be returned to the original construction site. These repairs could be extremely costly, with the total cost of the NSC project now exceeding two billion euros. The Chernobyl incident highlights the urgent risks posed by military activities in the region and shows the imminent threat of a radioactivity release that could have consequences beyond Ukraine.
