Heavy rain alarm in Seelze: New map shows flood risks!

Seelze. On July 1 of this year, storm-like rainfall turned the streets from Seelze into raging rivers! The fire brigade had to deploy numerous missions within a very short time, while the city had got off lightly in the summer. But the alarm bells ring: climate experts and meteorologists warn of a dramatic increase in heavy rain events. The Hanover region has now launched a comprehensive heavy rain portal as a pioneer in Lower Saxony. At hannover.de/starkregen-Region, citizens can now see where the water could collect in extreme rains.

A heavy rain event is not fun! If there are enormous amounts of rain within a short time, one speaks of heavy rain. Meteorologists measure these amounts of water in millimeters per hour (mm/h). An example: 40 mm/h means that 40 liters of water fall on every square meter in an hour - this corresponds to the content of 40 tetrapaks mineral water! The German Weather Service raises the alarm when hourly rainy amounts of 15 to 40 millimeters are predicted. The new heavy rain note card shows that with such an event in Seelze, up to 50 centimeters of water could be - a scenario that statistically occurs every 50 years!
