New electoral system in Hückeswagen: 16 electoral districts for the 2025 local elections!

The city of Hückeswagen is facing a significant change in the upcoming local elections on September 14, 2025. According to official information, the number of council members will be reduced to 32 due to the decreased population. This leads to a restructuring of the electoral districts: in total there will be 16 electoral districts, which represents an adjustment compared to the previous 15 electoral districts, as oberberg-aktuell.de reported. These circumstances also require the establishment of new polling stations, including in the fire department on Straßweg and in the Schützenhaus.

Drastic changes in the city council

A review has shown that the originally planned reduction in the number of council members from 30 to 24 is unlawful due to existing statutes. The city administration incorrectly assumed that this reduction applied to the new city council. But the municipal supervisory authority of the Oberbergischer Kreis made it clear that the 2017 statutes are no longer valid, which means that the legal number of council members remains set at 32 hueckeswagen.de reported.

The election committee is planning a special meeting on December 12, 2024 to officially decide on the new electoral district division. However, the early federal election on February 23rd will continue to be based on the 12 previous electoral districts, without any changes within the city of Hückeswagen. This distinction is crucial for voters, as the new structure only applies to local elections.
