Fire in Melbourne: Masked arsonist attack synagogue!
Ripponlea, Australien - in Melbourne, Australia, a dramatic arson attack on a synagogue has shaken the community. Perpetrators covered with masks on Friday morning before sunrise in the Adass-Israel synagogue in Ripponlea, a fire, which caused considerable damage. Believers were already in the building in the incident, but fortunately no serious injuries were reported, the police reported. An eyewitness that appeared for morning prayer watched how the masked men distributed fire accelerators inside the building, whereupon the Inferno broke out. Chris Murray from the arson department of the state of Victoria said: "We believe that it was deliberately and that the synagogue was targeted", reported the Krone .
The quickly alarmed fire brigade was on site with around 60 emergency services and 17 extinguishing vehicles to fight the fire. The synagogue suffered "considerable damage" and the interior was "completely burned out", as member of the municipality Benjamin Klein said. Prime Minister Anthony Albanese said horrified by the incident: "This violence and destruction in a place of prayer is a scandal. This attack has endangered lives and clearly aims to stir up fear in the community." Albanese demanded “zero tolerance” for anti -Semitism, but also expressed his concern about the increasing attacks on Jewish institutions in Australia, especially since the escalated conflict between Israel and Hamas. "I think an attack on a synagogue is by definition an act of anti-Semitism," emphasized Albanese, as well as Die Zeit reported.
The Jewish community in Australia is increasingly unsettled by the frequent attacks that awake the memory of the Holocaust. Jillian Segal, the country's Jewish special representative, expressed her concern about the escalation of violence. In a statement, the government announced measures to combat anti -Semitism and Islam hostility, while Minister Jacinta Allan promised financial support for the repair of the destroyed synagogue. The reactions on this fig attack are strong and do not leave any space for tolerance to such files of aggression.
