Wismar. The residents of the houses behind the choir 5 and 7 experienced a nightmare. The fire brigade was alerted at 2.47 a.m. when a devastating fire broke out in the basement of house number 7. The dense smoke quickly pulled through the upper floors and woke up the sleeping tenants, including the Wada family who fought for their lives.

With an impressive use of ten vehicles and 41 firefighters, the rescuers managed to bring 27 people to safety. Eight people, including three children, had to be taken to the hospital due to smoke poisoning. Romil Wada described the dramatic minutes: "We had to over the ladder and jumping pillows from the kitchen window. We could no longer escape through the stairwell." His children have been traumatized since the incident and can no longer sleep calmly.

Second fire in a short time

The damage is enormous: water pipes have burst, power lines melted, and the back of the building is black before soot. For the time being, the residents are not allowed to return to their apartments. The "The Salon" hairdressing salon, which now redirects its customers to the hospital, is particularly affected. "We had just opened again, and now it is burning again," complains Torsten Hill from the Café next door, who feels the devastating consequences of the fire. The criminal police are already investigating after it had only burned in the same building two weeks earlier. Rumors about illegal electricity traps make the round and could be the cause of the fires.

The tenants are in great concern for their future. "If it was a technical defect, our insurance company is responsible. We are unlucky for arson," says Hill. The investigation is ongoing and those affected hope for quick clarity about the causes of the devastating fires.
