50 years of towing service: over 1.3 million false parkers!

Jedletzbergerstraße, 1110 Wien, Österreich - For 50 years now, the towing troop of the waste management department, street cleaning and fleet (MA 48) in Vienna ensures that false parkers quickly disappear from the cityscape. The reason for the foundation was a tragic incident in which a false parker blocked access to an accident site to the fire brigade. Since the first towing of a vehicle on December 2, 1974, over 1.3 million vehicles have been removed. According to the city, this number could result in a route from six times Vienna to Brussels. In 2023 alone, around 25,000 cars were removed from traffic -contrary parking parking, often due to blocked entrances or prohibited holding zones, as the information from today.at show.

However, the challenges of city traffic are still enormous. In 1974 just 484,603 vehicles were approved in Vienna, while in 2023 this number rose to almost one million, specifically 924,460. In addition, almost 2,300 desolate bicycles and around 23,000 illegally parked shopping carts have to be removed every year. To cope with these tasks, the MA 48 is not only available for a central towing space in Simmering, but also 15 towing cars that are on behalf of four external companies. However, towing processes may only be carried out according to an official advertisement, for example by the police.

growing needs in traffic

Traffic use in Vienna has changed seriously over the years. In 2001, 729.5 million trips by public transport were counted, while 961.7 million trips were already registered in 2017. Air traffic also experienced huge growth. The total number of air travel has more than doubled compared to 2002. These figures make it clear that means of transport such as the subway, tram and bus are no longer an integral part of everyday life and the logistics of goods, as the statistics from the Department of Corporate Controlling of the Viennese lines, which also contain the communications about the airport operators and the port coverage.
