ATV exposes the business with love for massive criticism!

Österreich - ATV has temporarily paused the documentary soap "The Business with Love" after sharp criticism of the show has been practiced. The broadcast of the next episode, which was originally planned for next Wednesday, was suspended. This documentation illuminates the life of Austrian and German men who are looking for partners in Eastern Europe, especially in countries such as Slovakia, Poland, Romania, Russia, Thailand or the Philippines. Protagonists in the series are mostly men and older age who often use marriage agencies or partner agencies.

The show faces massive criticism, including media minister Andreas Babler (SPÖ) and Florian Klenk, the editor -in -chief of the "Falter". These voices describe the content of the program as "sexist, racist and contemptuous for women". In particular, they denounce the normalization of violence, attacks and the treatment of women as goods. BABLER has clearly noticed that the viewing point of sexual exploitation was unacceptable and announced that it would make the ATV management aware of this grievance. Klenk also described the program as a trivialization of rape culture and women's trade.

criticism and reaction

In social media, a lively discussion about the glorification of sexual violence is also conducted on the program. The women's chairman of SPÖ, ÖVP, Neos and the Greens have also clearly positioned themselves and criticized the content as harmful and thoughtful. In the consequence, ATV has withdrawn the mostly criticized episode and is planning a comprehensive internal quality control for the entire series.

ATV has distanced itself in a statement of sexist and racist content as well as any form of violence and misogyny. The broadcasting management emphasized that such content is not tolerated and that the current incidents are taken seriously. The last clips of the controversial episode have also been taken offline.

historical context

The debate about “Love business” is part of a major problem that affects the media landscape. Historically, the new women's movement in the 1970s already pointed out stereotypical representations of women in the media, a topic that is intensively examined in gender research. In a basic study in 1975 it was found that women on German television are strongly underrepresented and mostly appear in stereotypical roles. This stereotyping is still a problem that affects many areas, such as media reporting and the presentation of gender conditions.

The influence of gender images and the way women are shown in the media has far -reaching social implications. Studies show that women who see “Soap Operas” often actively deal with the content, which indicates that the reception of media content is not passive. Nevertheless, the dominance of male perspectives in many media forms remains a challenge that contributes to the establishment of equality in journalism and beyond

Overall, this case shows how important it is to critically question media content and to analyze their influence on social gender relations. The reactions to "Business with Love" are in the context of growing sensitivity to the effects of media on our perceptions and the treatment of gender issues.
