Zelensky ready to withdraw as president for peace in Ukraine

The Ukrainian President Wolodymyr Selenskyj said on Sunday that he was "ready" to step down as head of state if this means peace for his country. He indicated that he could possibly exchange his resignation for NATO membership.

Selenskyj's willingness to resign

When asked during a press conference, whether he was ready to step down to ensure peace for Ukraine, Selenskyj replied: "If [it guarantees peace for Ukraine], if you really want me to step back, I am ready. I can exchange it for NATO."

NATO membership and the Ukrainian armed forces

The Ukrainian President had previously stated that the army of its country had to double its strength of troops if NATO rejected a membership. At the beginning of the month, the US defense minister Pete Hegseth said that Kyiv's NATO joining was unrealistic.

conflict with Donald Trump

Selenskyj's statements come between him and Donald Trump in the middle of an escalating dispute after the US President incorrectly accused Ukraine of being conflict. When Selenskyj struck back and accused Trump to be in a "disinformation room", Trump Selenskyj called a "dictator". This argument puts a strain on relationships in a decisive moment of the conflict.
