peace talks and a lack of progress

The talks on Friday marked the first personal meeting of the two sides since the early weeks of the war. The meeting took place in Istanbul, chaired by Turkey, with Russian President Vladimir Putin, who originally suggested the talks, sent a lower -ranking delegation. The Ukrainian President Wolodymyr Selenskyj also stayed away because he had declared that he did not want to meet another Russian official representative, but only with Putin himself.

unchanged positions

During the talks, Russia demanded that Ukraine have to cede areas that are still under the control of Kiev. This position has long been rejected by Ukraine. The leaders of Great Britain, France, Germany and Poland described the Russian demands in the negotiations as "unacceptable".
