Sophia Kircher becomes the first President of the Boys EVP from Austria!

Brüssel, Belgien - On July 12, 2025, Sophia Kircher was elected by the young ÖVP as the first President of the Young European People's Party (Yepp). This election took place during a congress in Brussels and is an important step for the political representation of young people in Europe. Kircher received an outstanding 86.7 percent of the vote and replaced the previous President Lídia Pereira from Spain. 211 delegates and around 250 participants took part in the conference, including the European Minister Claudia Plakolm.

Plakolm was optimistic about Kircher's choice and emphasized the essential role that young people play in the political landscape of Europe. In her first speech, Kircher himself addressed the challenges that the generation faces, including crises at the borders of Europe, migration, disinformation, climate change and polarization in society. She announced that she is concentrating her efforts on the further development of the peace project Europe and leading national projects, such as a uniform EU-wide train ticket.

The way to the presidency

Kircher has an extensive political experience. Since March 2025 she has been the Federal Party chairman of the ÖVP and since May 2021 also the Federal Obwoman Deputy of the Young People's Party. Before that, she has represented the Tyrolean People's Party since 2018 as the state chairwoman of the young People's Party and has been deputy state party chairman since July 2022. In the last period she was the first vice president of the Yepp.

The Yepp is an important platform that currently combines 51 youth organizations with around 1.4 million members. It was founded in 1997 and plays a crucial role in political discourse on youth policy in Europe. Kircher's election is not only a personal success, but also a significant step for Austria's representation within this organization.

focus on youth participation

The political goals of Kircher are in line with the EU youth strategy, which aims to promote youth policy cooperation in Europe. This strategy, valid until 2027, focuses on the participation of youth in democratic life as well as social and civic engagement. It is particularly important that it offers young people the opportunity to actively participate in the design of their future. The strategy includes three core areas: participation, encounter and qualification.

With her choice as President of Yepp, Sophia Kircher becomes a key figure that can strengthen young voices in Europe and tackle the challenges of the coming years. Their commitment and political initiatives will make a significant contribution to shaping the future of Europe.
