Ukrainian doctor transports children's heart despite the Russian attack for transplantation

Kyiv burned while Dr. Bory's Todurov raced through the city with an ambulance, undeterred from the deep noises of the explosions and the terrible sounds of Russian drones that flew across him.

He was determined to deliver his valuable freight: a human heart.

The patient of Todurov - a child - was seriously ill in a hospital. He only had hours to act.

The child had suffered from heart disease for several years, but her condition had deteriorated at the beginning of this week, and Todurov knew that a new heart was her only chance.

When a new heart was available from a childlike donor on the other side of the city, he did not wait for the Russians to stop attacks.

rising air strikes on Ukraine

Russia had strengthened its air raids against Ukraine in the past few weeks. In the night from Wednesday to Thursday it was fired via 400 drones and 18 rockets, including eight ballist tables and six March aircraft.

While the Ukrainian authorities asked the population to hide in air-raid shelter and cellars, Todurov and his team made the 16-kilometer path from the Okhmatdyt Children's House in the west of Kyiv to the heart institute on the eastern bank of the river, while rockets and drones flew around them.

Although the Ukrainian Air Force was able to intercept or neutralize the overwhelming majority of the drones and rockets, two people were killed and dozens were injured.

"The heart beats"

The mass attack on Kyiv was only the last in a fatal series of Russian attacks. The day before, Moscow had started over 700 drones against Ukraine on a new record night.

Todurov, the director of the heart institute, and his team worked tirelessly over the two nights of the attacks.

After performing a heart surgery at the institute on Wednesday, he traveled across the city to Okhmatdyt, where he took the heart of the donor.

Then he personally escorted the organ through the city.

The crossing of the Dnipro via a bridge is extremely dangerous during an attack on Kiev, since vehicles are unprotected and the Ukrainian air defense systems aim to absorb Russian drones and rockets when they are above the river to minimize the influence of falling rubble.

A video recorded during the hectic journey shows a big fire near the street while Todurov continues. "We transport a heart," he says.

The Russian attack on the capital was still in progress when Todurov entered the heart institute's operating room, led a large medical team and transplanted the heart into his patient's body.

In an impressive moment that was captured on the camera and made available, the new heart can be seen, as it only hits the patient's chest after the trip through Kiev, while Russian drones and rockets rain on the city.

"The heart beats and the pressure is stable. We hope that ... (the patient) recovers and leads a long and fulfilling life," said the doctor.

The Ukrainian Transplantation Coordination Center announced in a explanation that the donor was a four-year-old girl who was explained by a medical advice for brain dead after suffering serious injuries.

The girl's mother, himself a medical specialist, approved her daughter's organ donation.

, while Todurov transplanted the girl's heart in the heart of his patient, her kidneys also transplanted a 14-year-old boy and her liver of a 16-year-old girl, the center announced. The other two patients were in the OKMATDYT hospital, so that no transport was required to bring the organs to them.

The coordination center said that two of the three recipients were in a critical condition and that they had only had to live for days or weeks without the transplants.

"May the little donor rest in peace. Our condolences apply to her family and gratitude for her difficult but important decision," said the center.
