Ukrainian doctor saves children's heart after Russian attack for transplantation

kyjiw burned while Dr. Bory's Todurov raced through the city with an ambulance, unimpressed by the deep detonations of the explosions and the scary noises of Russian drones that hovered above him. He was determined to deliver his precious freight: a human heart.

The patient of Todurov - a child - was seriously ill in a hospital. He only had a few hours to live. The child had suffered from heart disease for several years, but in the past week his condition had worsened drastically, and Todurov knew that a new heart was her only chance.

urgency and determination

When a heart was available from a child -ready child on the other side of the city, he did not wait until the Russians stopped attacking. In the past few weeks, Russia has strengthened its air raids on Ukraine. In one night alone it was more than 400 drones and 18 rockets, including eight ballistic and six marching bodies, and Ukrainian authorities called on the population to hide in bunkers and cellars.

Despite the dangerous environment, Todurov and his team undertook the 16-kilometer journey from the Okhmatdyt Children's Hospital in the west of Kyjiws to the heart institute on the eastern bank of the river, while rockets and drones flew through the air. Although the Ukrainian Air Force was able to intercept the majority of the drones and rockets, two people were killed in the attack on Thursday and dozens of others were injured.

a heart for hope

The massive attack on Kyjiw was only the youngest in a fatal series of Russian attacks. The day before, Moscow had started more than 700 drones - a new record - against Ukraine. DISTUROV, the director of the heart institute, and his team worked tirelessly during the two nights.

After performing a heart surgery in the institute on Wednesday, he made his way to the OKMATDYT, where he took the heart of the donor. He personally accompanied the organ across the city. The crossing of the DNIPRO bridge is extremely dangerous during an attack on Kyjiw, since vehicles are exposed and the Ukrainian air defense forces target Russian drones and rockets when they are over the river to minimize the influence of falling debris.

A video that was recorded during the hectic journey shows a big fire near the street while Todurov continues. "We transport a heart," he says calmly.

a miracle of medicine

When FIRDUROV entered the operating room at the heart institute, the Russian attack on the capital was still in progress. He led a large medical team that transplanted the heart into his patient's body. An impressive moment that was captured by a camera and divided with CNN shows how the new heart beats in the patient's chest just a few hours after the trip through the bombed Kyjiw.

"The heart works and the pressure is stable. We hope that ... (the patient) will recover and lead a long, fulfilling life," said the doctor.

The Ukrainian Transplantation Coordination Center announced in a statement that the donor was a four-year-old girl who was explained by a medical advice for brain fat after serious injuries. The girl's mother, himself a medical specialist, approved the removal of organ.

During Todurov's heart transplantation in the heart institute, the girl's kidneys were transplanted to a 14-year-old boy and the liver of a 16-year-old girl who was also in the OKMATDYT hospital, so that no further transport of the organs was required.

gratitude and grief

The coordination center announced that two of the three recipients were in a critical condition and that without the transplants had only had to live for days or weeks. "May the little donor rest in peace. Our condolences go to her family and our thanks for their difficult but important decision," said the center.
