Putin's terror: A year after Nawalny's death - the opposition is silent!
Moskau, Russland - On February 16, 2025, the death of the prominent Russian Kremlin critic Alexej Nawalny marks the death of the celebrity. The united call for the memorial event at the grave of the 47-year-old in Moscow attracts hundreds of people who want to have the last honor, despite impending security measures. Already in the previous year, tens of thousands of Nawalny's grave visited when people showed their solidarity with the deceased activist and protested against Vladimir Putin's authoritarian regime, such as ZDF reported.
repression against oppositional
The Russian judiciary continues to rigorously take action against dissenters. Although Nawalny and his movement are still a symbol of resistance to corruption and the regime, state repression is hardly pace. The human rights organization Memorial currently lists 785 political prisoners. In addition, three were sentenced to long prison terms by Nawalny's lawyers in January, which represents another difficult blow for the defenders of human rights in Russia. Political engagement for Nawalny or its anti-corruption fund FBK is threatened with extreme punishments, such as the Kleine Zeitung reported.
With the death of Nawalny in the "Polarwolf" criminal camp and the subsequent persecution of his supporters, including his widow Julia Nawalnaja, the state power shows that it does not tolerate critical voices. One of the threats pronounced against oppositional abroad is also the claim of Russian secret service that the Ukrainian secret service is planning attacks on exile opponents-a clear sign of intimidation. Meanwhile, the organization and leadership of the opposition remains divided and it is difficult to draw the necessary strength out of the persecution to hold together against the opressive regime.
