Russian position on ceasefire
The Kremlin consultant Yuriy Ushakov said on Thursday that Moscow did not wish for a temporary ceasefire, as this would give the Ukrainian army a breathing space. He explained Russia's point of view in a phone call with the US national security consultant Michael Waltz. Ushakov emphasized: "I have shown our position that this is nothing more than a temporary breath for the Ukrainian military."
Kreml's cancellation of a temporary solution
The Kremlin has excluded a temporary ceasefire in the past. However, this is the first time that a high-ranking Russian official has clarified this position since the United States and Ukraine had discussions in Saudi Arabia this week, in which Kiev supported for a 30-day Waffe arrest accepted for the entire front line.
reactions from Russia
The spokesman for the Kremlin, Dmitry Peskov, previously said on Thursday that Russia would formulate his position as soon as it receives direct information from the American side. Witkoff arrived in Moscow on Thursday, reported the Russian news agency TASS.
America's role in the conflict
Before the talks in Moscow, ushakov also emphasized that “the Americans and we believe that there can be no discussions about NATO in connection with the regulation of the Ukrainian conflict and the future of Ukraine.” Moscow had previously stated that the presence of troops from NATO countries in Ukraine, even under national flags, would be unacceptable. On Thursday, the spokeswoman for the Foreign Ministry, Maria Zakharova, went on and rejected every foreign military presence.
reactions from the USA
"For us it is absolutely unacceptable to station units of the armed forces of other states in Ukraine under any flag, be it as a foreign contingent, military bases or in the context of peace missions," said Zakharova and added that Russia will react "with all available means". When asked about the possibility of European troops as peace guards, US Foreign Minister Marco Rubio replied on Wednesday: "There are various ways to construct a deterrent mechanism on site."
