New entry rules: EU citizens need the ETA for UK from April!
From April 2, 2025, all EU citizens must have an electronic travel authorization (ETA) in order to enter the United Kingdom. This new set of rules concerns travelers from all over Europe and was introduced by the British government to strengthen the immigration system. The 5min.at provides comprehensive information on the requirements.
The application of the ETA is imperative, since the entry is refused without this permit. Travelers should ideally apply for their ETA before booking the flight. The cost of approval is 10 British pounds, which corresponds to around 12 euros. The validity of the ETA extends over two years and allows several entry and stays of up to three months to visit.
Application and use of the ETA
The ETA can only be requested online via the official app or the website of the British immigration authority. Fast processing is usually possible; Most applications are automatically approved within a few minutes, but in some cases it can also take up to three days. Biographical and biometric data must be specified in the application, as well as questions about suitability and any criminal record. The decision is digitally linked to the passport.
For travelers without a smartphone, it is possible to apply for the ETA via the GOV.UK website. It is pointed out that airlines check the validity of the ETA before boarding; Boarding is not possible without an approved ETA.
Security and fraud prevention
The United Kingdom follows the example of other countries such as the USA, Canada, Australia and New Zealand with the introduction of this regulation. Seema Malhotra, Minister for Immigration and Citizenship, underlined the importance of these measures for border security. The ETA will help to make the immigration system safer by checking all people before you enter.
In order to avoid fraud, travelers are advised to only use official government pages for the application to prevent excessive fees or abuse. In addition, every person, including children, needs their own ETA for entry. This new system was developed with regard to existing ETA requirements for non-European citizens, such as from the USA, Canada and Australia.
Almost 1.1 million people have already applied for an ETA. The British government works closely with the travel industry to ensure that the implementation of the new digital requirements. Further information and details can be found on the Official government page .
